Depuis la mort d’Helmut Newton (1920 -2004), aucune rétrospective du photographe n’a eu lieu en France, pays où il a cependant créé une partie majeure de son œuvre, notamment en travaillant pour l’édition française de Vogue. Le Grand Palais nous offre nous offre une rétrospective qui réunit plus de deux cents images, quasi exclusivement des tirages originaux ou « vintage » réalisés sous le contrôle d’Helmut Newton : polaroïds, tirages de travail de divers formats, œuvres monumentales. Elle sera enrichie d’un extrait du film réalisé par June Newton, épouse du photographe pendant soixante ans et elle-même photographe : Helmut by June. L’exposition ne s’attache pas à l’unique représentation de la Femme par Newton, mais restitue les divers champs, parfois plus secrets, de son travail. Conçue par June Newton et ponctuée de citations du photographe, elle est aussi, à double titre, « Newton par Newton ».

Since Helmut Newton’s death (1920 – 2004), there has been no retrospective of his work in France, although he did much of his work there, particularly for the French edition of Vogue. Provocative, sometimes shocking, Newton’s work tried to capture the beauty, eroticism, humour – and sometimes violence – that he sensed in the social interaction within the familiar worlds of fashion, luxury, money and power. The Grand Palace offers us with a retrospective that includes more than two hundred photographs, mostly original or vintage prints made under Helmut Newton’s supervision: Polaroid, working prints in various sizes, monumental works. It will be supported by press records, and a film made by his wife of sixty years, the photographer June Newton: Helmut by June. The exhibition does not stop at Newton’s women, but explores the many, sometimes secret fields of his work. Designed by June Newton and punctuated by quotations from the photographer, it will be on both counts “Newton by Newton”.
